Rhodes Scholarships Australia 2010

The Rhodes Trust offers nine Rhodes Scholarships in Australia each year, one for award in each State and three for Australia at Large.

Rhodes Scholarships are tenable at the University of Oxford. A Scholarship may be held for three years but is usually awarded for two years in the first instance. The Oxford academic year starts in October.

Eligibility Criteria

The Scholarships are open to men and women, single or married, who:

  • have passed their 18th and not reached their 25th birthday by 1 October in the year of application;
  • are Australian citizens (candidates with dual citizenship may not apply in more than one country);
  • have been resident in Australia for at least five of the last ten years;
  • have completed or expect to have completed the requirements for a degree (preferably an honours degree or the equivalent) preferably by December 2009, and certainly no later than October 2010;
  • are available for interview in Australia (29 and 30 October for those applying in WA, and late November/early December in Canberra for any candidate whose application for a State award is unsuccessful after interview but is forwarded for consideration for an Australia at Large Award);
  • believe they have the desired qualities of intellect and character.

Selection Procedure

Entry to Oxford is very competitive and the level of academic achievement of most applicants is normally very high. This effectively means that those who do not either hold, or have reason to believe they will achieve, a first class honours degree (or equivalent) stand little chance of selection. Successful applicants combine very high academic achievement with other outstanding qualities of intellect and character. More details of the qualities sought appear in the material on the website (see below) and in the information package available from the Secretary (see address at the base of this page)

A Rhodes Scholar receives a personal stipend fixed by the Trustees. (Currently the stipend is set at £917 sterling (AUD1,852) per month.) In addition all fees are paid by the Trust direct to the College. (Married applicants should note that the stipend is sufficient for one person only, and that the Trust takes no financial responsibility for the support of a scholar's spouse.) The Rhodes Trust will assist successful candidates with their travelling expenses to the United Kingdom.

In the case of applicants wishing to undertake studies in medicine at Oxford it is necessary to establish from the Secretary of the Medical Faculty at Oxford that the course they wish to pursue is acceptable. This approval should be obtained early and preferably before submitting an application for a Scholarship.
